This is a experimental book editorial design. The whole idea is making a book about discovery & curiosity, so the book itself was hidden inside a rock (I built the rock by ceramic clay). And once open it, audience will see a letter and a hammer, and begin a discovery.
This is a book about my story in Boston.
Without telling people this is Boston by using longitude and altitude, and using y own photography and writing.
This is a school project finished in 2 weeks. The aim is to design something in an extreme scale.
So the first step is to consider what is my scale and how extremely it could be. The word "extreme" is not only the size large or small, but also the deep meaning behind the size.
What I found is the tag in our cloth is kind of bother me. Some of them are too many and people have to remove it. After I searched online, I notice that caring labels are made for some rules, which means manufactures has to make useless stuffs to cater some sort of laws, in the mean time bought a lot of inconvenience to costumer.
So here I created a brand to make "super easy washable cloth" in a ironic way. the band itself has a super complex name, and so does it labeling.
transfer print into fabric
come with a pack
the name of my brand is called" this is a cloth that is easily washable, quickly wearable, clearly understandable, readily available and you'd better get one."
This project is focusing on the facts that “News” somehow affects our daily life and it has such a specific voice that may lead people to a certain direction. But however, there will be more than one point of view on a story, and people should know that and compareing different views to get the most complete information.
Here in my design, the Boston Globe and the New York Times were chosen to be my example. I overlapped this two news together, and let them sharing a similar topic. Since it was overlapped, people may use the magnifying glass that I put on the bag to catch the information.
There are two color systems in this design, and the blue, red filter magnifying glass is the tool can help people identify the content.
The action of finding the information may bring my concept, everything has more than one point of view.
Boston University Graphic Design Social Responsibility Project: Every Story
This is an editorial book design for my Graphic Design History final paper, 5 Ways Japanese Traditional Aesthetics Influences Graphic Design.
I'm using rice paper like texture paper to be the body, and covered by a transparent special paper that related to Japanese design.
In his "Six Memos for the Next Millennium", Calvino proposed five characteristics the new millennium literary works should have. Namely lightness, quickness, exactitude, visible and multiplicity. Of cause, these five qualities are not easy to achieve.
In my understanding, I’d like to look upon these five qualities as five 'prescriptions'. If you want to get a certain quality, you’ll have to collect all the ingredients which constitute the prescription, then you’ll have the quality.
I try to analyse all the five qualities, and found that each quality has its own special ingredients, such as "knowledge", "one arrow from Cupid" and "a song from mermaid", most of which are very abstract and kind of like magic. Therefore, this is not just a simple branding design, and also an interact with the audience, or a conversion of thought.
If all the qualities in the world could be obtained by the compound of ingredients, would it be interesting?
Unpredictable Editorial Book Design
I’m wondering if you have this experience – some “unconscious” photos which are just blurs or bizarre images appear in your phone out of nowhere, you don’t even remember when did you press the shutter and took them. Or when you really want to record this moment, but you only got a strange photo because of shaking hands and some other errors.
In the past 3 weeks, I collected several this kind of “Photos” from my family, friends, classmates as well as myself. Behind these “unpredictable” photos, you can always find exclusive stories. Why does the photo look like that at that moment? Are we trying to do a conscious thing when we press the shutter unconsciously?
Every second is brand new for me as I can not predict what will happen and who I’ll run into the next second. Unpredictable things happen every now the then, it is these things that constitute our different and divers life. Not only these unpredictable photos but also all the accidentals in our life are deserved to be treated with heart.
We had a project called "the unknown", in the name of finding one unfamiliar thing and document it for a week.
So I decided to learn Spanish.
After one week, I had some documents and started design. In my opinion, Learning is like breathing that won't stop until dying, and the process of learning is like fresh blood pumping into our brain and whole body. So I combined my voice in learning Spanish with the idea of heart beating form, and wish to share my story.
UNKNOWN project: Spanish Learning Documentation
For this project we had really limited time on searching, reading, thinking and designing. The challenging part is how to convert digital information from the web into printing stuff and react in short time.
My article is a short introduction for a song called You Can Count On Me performed by an Ireland music band in 90s. The text is too short so I have to think the way to arrange these empty pages.
Since it was about an old band, I decided to use the “news paper style” to bring readers the old feeling. Hand writing was also used in my booklet in order to show the 90s style.
Made the form related to content is what I learned from this exercise. Audience will get feelings from the texture and the material of a book while they are reading.
This board game is inspired from a recent event, Chinese Military Parade 2015. It has three players as Navy, Army and Air Force respectively. Each player has his own colour and markers (markers derived from previous 2D project). The goal of the game is to collect enough cubes to start the military parade
VI for SANZHEN TIGER CONSERVATION
This is a project I've done in 2016 summer, while I was a intern in SanzhenCo., Ltd, in Changsha, CHINA.
Sanzhen Tiger Conservation is a group that helps tiger to live a better life, and having people to visit the park as a travel place.
My client wants tiger to be the main part of the whole design. So I took the shape from a original Chinese character “興”，combining with a octagon to show the various of the tiger.
Boston University Art Galleries Logo Revise
Boston University Art Galleries are located in 3 places along the Commonwealth Ave. It is now does not have a complete visual system. So I decided to revise its old logo and develop it into a new system.
The word “Temperature” in Chinese has a wide range of profound meanings.
Some of them are concrete, like the degrees ofCelsius or Fahrenheit we use to measure the air temperature and the thermometers we use when we are sick.
Some of the meanings are abstract, they can’t be measured by digits. We can’t see or touch them, but we can feel them.
In China we call this the “Temperature in Human Relationships” which means we can also sense warm and cold among people’s emotions. When facing other people’senthusiasm, encouragement, gratitude and mutual care, we will feel warm. On the other hand, apathy, malice, ingratitude and betrayal will bring us cold feelings.
This is my final design for my undergraduate school. I created a brand called PINKALLERY ( PINK+GALLERY) in the meaning of collecting great pink designs. So it is not only sale my own design works but also sale other's pink design that I pick.
